EDS and WRES - 2017 actions

Mid Essex Hospitals sees the Equality Delivery System (EDS) and the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) as means to an end, not simply something to be reported. We see these tools as a means to show information and evidence that helps us identify where different groups of people might encounter a barrier. For instance, for employees this could be a potential barrier to progression, and for patients, it could be a barrier to effective treatment.

In June 2016, the Trust’s Workforce Programme Board (WPB) confirmed that the Equality and Diversity Steering Group would take responsibility for driving forward the Equality and Diversity workstream as part of the Trust’s transformation agenda. This has supported the Trust in having a management process that develops and progresses Equality and Diversity measures that will make a difference to patients and staff.

At the end of June 2015, we published the baseline position for this Trust in regard to the national (NHS England) indicators for the WRES. Since then the Trust's Equality and Diversity Steering Group has considered and reviewed changes in working practices in the Trust that will lead to an improvement of the baseline position over time. The 2016/17 WRES data will be reviewed at the next E&D Steering Group meeting in September 2017 and further narrative will then be provided here.

The EDS is currently being reviewed by the Equality and Diversity Steering Group and we are continuing to populate this document and examining it for 'gaps' - gaps of evidence that might mean we can't be sure some people are not encountering a barrier to obtaining the same experience as everyone else.
