CLASS 1 – WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

Trust Profile

Established in 1992 as ‘Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust’, the Trust provides well regarded local elective and emergency services to approximately 360,000 people living in and around the towns of Chelmsford, Maldon, Braintree and Witham. The Trust also provides a regional plastics, head and neck and upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) surgical service to a population of 3.2 million and a supra regional burns service to a population of 9.8 million.

The Trust has enjoyed a strong clinical reputation for many years as demonstrated by Healthcare Commission assessments and the establishment of regional and supra regional services including plastics and burns, upper GI and head and neck surgery.

The Trust, based in the heart of Essex, employs over 3,700 staff and provides services from six sites in and around Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree. The main site is Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford which is being redeveloped as a £148m capital scheme financed under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

The Trust has successfully delivered ambitious savings plans in both 2006/07 and 2007/08 while improving its HCC assessment (for quality of services) from good to excellent. The Trust will build on this positive momentum to further improve the patient experience as the Trust becomes a Foundation Trust (FT).

CLASS 3 - WHAT ARE OUR PRIORITIES AND HOW WE ARE DOING

Looking ahead, the Trust’s strategic vision is based upon its overall objective to protect and develop both market share and its current range of services. Given its range of specialties, the Trust wants to develop is vision to be ‘more than a District General Hospital (DGH)’ and as such its future objectives will be based on the following:

  • Provision of excellent local acute services;

  • Provision of specialist services;

  • Provision of care outside the hospital; and

  • Provision of other services that the market may require.

The Trust believes that service provision will continue to evolve rapidly over the next 10 years. Two core strategies have therefore been developed to achieve the objective of protecting and developing market share and product mix:

  • Differentiating itself from its existing competitors and new market entrants on a reputation of excellence and safety – the Trust’s strategy is underpinned by a need to put patients first (in terms of their safety and experience). Furthermore, it recognises the need to meet and where possible exceed standards expected of it. Innovation will be used to keep the Trust able to respond to its competitive threats.

  • Building the right capacity- ensuring the Trust develops its use of estates, staffing and IT resources to allow it to respond rapidly, flexibly and innovatively to the changing healthcare needs of the population.
