New toys for children’s burns unit
A Basildon man has donated nearly £900 to the children's burns unit at Broomfield hospital in memory of his wife, Betty.
With the help of family and friends, Ray Morgan collected nearly £900 to purchase toys and games for the unit's playroom. Along with his daughter, Carol Adams and neighbour, Helen, Ray visited the unit to present his donation to staff and deliver two ride along toys to keep the children amused.
Carol explains: . We wanted the children’s burns unit to benefit as my mum was scalded as a child so I know she would be extremely pleased to see the money raised helping children on the unit and hopefully making their time in hospital a little better. My mum was a very popular lady and we were very touched by how many people donated money for this worthwhile cause."
Jo Myers, Senior Sister on the Children's Burns Ward said: “The gifts Ray and his family have bought are brilliant and will no doubt be extremely popular with the children on the unit. We are immensely grateful for their generous donation as this will help fund more toys for the play room and will also go towards an interactive bath toy for the unit, which will provide a great distraction and take their mind off their treatment. On behalf of the staff here, I’d like to thank Ray and his family for this thoughtful donation especially at such a difficult time, and for helping us create a welcoming, child-friendly atmosphere on the unit.”
Ian will run, swim and cycle for a good cause
For most people, competing in a 40km cycle, or a 1.5km swim, or a 10km would be enough of a challenge, but not for Ian Edwards from theatres who is taking on all three in the Virgin Active London Triathlon in support of the hospital.
Ian said: “I have always enjoyed running so wanted to set myself a challenge as I train better with a goal to work towards. I initially considered running the marathon, but pounding the streets didn’t seem like much fun so I thought a triathlon seemed like a good alternative. Training for all three events is hard work but it’s going really well. Since it’s the London Triathlon I wanted to do it for charity and thought, where better to raise money for than the hospital I work at!”
Ian couldn’t decide between supporting the Intensive Care or the Phoenix Unit so is dividing all the money he raises between the two funds, which will go towards providing extra equipment and amenities for both.
The London Triathlon will take place on 31 July, anyone wanting to support Ian’s efforts can visit his justgiving page at:

Dancing tots raise money for neonatal
Over 70 excited preschool youngsters enjoyed an afternoon of music and dancing at a children’s party held to benefit the neonatal unit.
The party was held at Springfield Parish Centre and marked the 5th year of the local branch of the children’s entertainment company, Jo Jingles, and raised over £400. As well as singing and dancing, the children also took part in games, raffles and a colouring competition and were treated to some extra entertainment from the guest of honour – a life sized Jo Jingles!
The event was organised by local mum, Stella Paul who knows how the important the work of neonatal staff is after her son was born seven weeks premature. Stella visited the unit to meet the staff and present the donation in person and said: “I’m delighted the money we have raised will be used to support patients on the neonatal unit. My son is 15 now and wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the special care he was given so I know this donation will be put to very good use. All the children had a fantastic time at the party and it’s lovely to come to the unit and see where the money we raised will go.”
Christine Abbott, staff nurse on the unit, said: “This extremely kind donation will be used to provide additional amenities and home comforts for parents staying on the unit with their babies. All these extras help to make their time here a little more comfortable until they are ready to take baby home. We would all like to thank Stella and Jo Jingles for their generosity.”
