Local lads declare children’s MRI scanning facilities officially open
Two local school children helped to celebrate the hard work of some dedicated fundraisers when they officially the new children’s MRI ( Magnetic Resonance Imaging) facilities at Broomfield hospital.
Sean O’Connor, aged 9 from Witham, and Stuart Pearson, aged 13 from Chelmsford, were invited to open the new MRI anaesthetic and recovery rooms as a thank you to their parents who were amongst the numerous fundraisers for the appeal.
Dr Anthony Lipscomb, consultant paediatrician at mid Essex hospitals, who led the appeal, said:” I am delighted that we now have the facility for children to have MRI scans here at Broomfield Hospital. This specialist equipment makes the world of difference for our younger patients and their families. As MRI scans can be frightening for children they often need to be sedated which is why we needed the anaesthetic and recovery rooms. This is down to the fantastic work of our fundraisers. I would like to thank them all.”
The appeal raised £200,000 to buy specialist monitoring equipment and dedicated anaesthetic and recovery rooms for children to receive MRI scans.
Dr Lipscomb adds:” Having this service at Broomfield means that children will no longer have to travel to London for a MRI scan. We can now diagnose potentially life threatening illnesses here in Chelmsford which means children will receive the appropriate treatment sooner.”
