Pest Control at Mid Essex Hospitals
We have an obligation to our patients and staff, and also a corporate obligation, to call out pest control whenever a pest is spotted on our premises. Following a visit by pest control a report is always completed and if there is anything of clinical significance it is escalated to our infection control department for further investigation.
The majority of the call outs over the last two years have been to deal with troublesome insects such as ants and wasps. We have not had a problem with rats in our maternity unit. There was one instance when a rat hole was identified outside and, as a precaution, the pest control people were brought in.
As our main hospital site, Broomfield is in a rural location we are surrounded by wildlife, such as squirrels and foxes, which sometimes stray into our grounds. This means that we have to deal with more pests than if we were in an urban environment.
