Hospital scoops top prize for innovation
Mid Essex Hospitals is celebrating after fighting off stiff competition from 84 other entries to win first prize in the 2008 NHS innovation competition.
Mr Chris Spencer and Mr Phil Robarts, consultant obstetricians and gynecologists, picked up the award in the medical technology category in the 2008 Innovation Competition organised by Health Enterprise East (HEE), the NHS innovation hub for the East of England.
The winning device, put forward by Mr Spencer and Mr Robarts, is a clamp to be used in hysteroscopic surgery, enabling more effective removal of uterine polyps or fibroids.
Ruth May, chief executive of mid Essex hospitals, said:” "We are delighted that the innovative work of two of our consultants has been rewarded by winning this competition. We encourage the use of new medical technology within the Trust as it means we can continue to improve the service we provide to our patients. I am sure that many more departments have innovative ideas that can be put forward for next year’s competition so we can continue our success.”
The 2008 Innovation Competition was open to staff working in all branches of the NHS throughout Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, to put forward ideas for medical devices, software and service delivery improvements which will benefit the patient experience.
Chris Spencer and Phil Robarts were presented with the Barker Brettell Innovation Award for Medical Technology, together with a cheque for £3,000 to progress their idea.

This is now in its fourth year and once again the creativity shown by entrants demonstrates the dedication and enthusiasm of staff working across NHS Trusts across the region.
