New technique available at Broomfield Hospital to treat disorders in the intestine

Patients in Mid Essex can now receive an even better service due to a novel diagnostic technique used to explore, detect and even treat disorders in the large and small intestine.

The double balloon colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that is now available at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.  A colonoscopy is an examination of the bowel using a flexible tube with a tiny camera mounted on it.

Dr Rafal Radzioch, the consultant who recently introduced this new technique, said:  Even in an expert’s hands a colonoscopy is a difficult examination as in five to seven per cent of patients it fails to allow the doctor to visualise the entire bowel.  A double balloon colonoscopy is a major development as it can improve the patient’s experience and it means that all difficult colonoscopies can be successfully completed with no patients left undiagnosed This is especially important given the fact that an incidence of colorectal cancer is on increase.”

The double balloon technique involves the use of two balloons at the end of a special flexible tube (endoscope) with a tiny camera mounted on the end that is used to look inside the patient’s digestive system. This technique allows the entire bowel to be visualised by the doctor which means a thorough examination can take place and diagnosis made.

Dr Radzioch adds: “The gastro-intestinal endoscopy plays a major role in diagnosing the disorders of the oesophagus, stomach and a large bowel.”
