Interim Chair of Hospital Trust named as disabled person of the Year 2009
The interim Chair of Mid Essex Hospitals in Chelmsford has been named as the Disabled Person of the Year 2009.
Mike Adams, who is the also CEO of Essex Coalition of Disabled People (ECDP), won the accolade from RADAR – the national disability charity – at an awards ceremony on Monday 30 November.
On winning the award, Mike said: "It is an honour to be named Disabled Person of the Year by RADAR. This is a prestigious accolade and to be recognised for the work I have done in Essex is a privilege.
Mike has been the interim Chair of Mid Essex Hospitals since May 2009 and during this time has been responsible for the appointment of a new Chief Executive.
Graham Ramsay, Chief Executive of mid Essex Hospitals, said: “I am very pleased that Mike has picked up this prestigious award, it is well deserved and he should be very proud. Mike has worked incredibly hard over the last few months, as he has not only taken on the demanding role as the Trust’s Acting Chair, but continued in his ‘day-job’ as the Chief Executive of the ECDP. On behalf of the entire Trust I would like to send Mike our congratulations.”

1. Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust provides a comprehensive range of acute and community based services. It also hosts regional plastics, head and neck and upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) surgical services and a supra regional burns service to a population of 9.8 million.
The Trust based in the heart of Essex, employees over 3,800 staff and provides services to a cathcment poulation of 360,000 people from six sites in and around Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree. The main site is Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford which is being redeveloped as part of a £148m Private Finance Initiative (PFI).
2. ECDP is an organisation run by and for disabled people. Established in 1995 its origins are firmly rooted in a belief that the voice of disabled people, both as individuals and collectively, is vital if the lives of disabled people are to be enhanced.
