New Trust Non-Executive Director Appointed
Jan Smith has been appointed by the NHS Appointments Commission as a new non executive director of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust. The Trust runs Broomfield and St John’s hospitals and provides acute hospital based services to a population of approximately 360,000 people who live in and around the towns of Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon and Witham.
Jan’s appointment began on 1 May 2009 and she will serve on the Trust board for a period of four years.
Jan has lived in mid Essex area for over 30 years. She now lives near Coggeshall, but before that lived in Great Bardfield. She began her professional career in banking and worked for TSB, Lloyds and First Direct as Marketing Director for the launch of the UKs first telephone bank. She then moved into the motor industry where she was successively Sales and Marketing Director of Mazda Cars (UK) Ltd and Group Strategic Director of RAC Motoring Services.
She established her own marketing strategy company, The Virtual Company Ltd in 1998. Since then she has conducted a variety of major projects at senior level for, among others, Whitbread plc, The Open University, Norwich Union Healthcare and Liverpool Victoria.
Jan is a Non Executive Director of the Saffron Building Society and Government Actuary’s Department and is a member of both Audit Committees. She has held a number of Non Executive positions, including for seven years at HM Land Registry where she also chaired the Audit Committee and for eight years at The Royal Mint.
Mike Malone-Lee, chairman of mid Essex hospitals, said:” I am very pleased to welcome Jan to the Trust board. She brings with her a wealth of experience that will prove very beneficial to the Board and to the Trust.”
This appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice (Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments). All non executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Jan has not declared any political activity in the past five years and does not hold any ministerial appointments. She will receive remuneration of £6005 per annum.
