Topping Out Ceremony

1st May 2009

New Hospital Wing Reaches Structural Completion

Broomfield Hospital and Bouygues UK celebrated the structural completion of Broomfield Hospital today with a topping out ceremony. The ceremony was attended by staff from Mid Essex Hospitals and construction staff working on the building.

The topping out ceremony marks the completion of the structural frame of the new Broomfield Hospital – just 16 months after work began on site. The new £148m PFI hospital wing at Broomfield will mean that all of the Trust’s acute services will be centralised within the Broomfield Hospital site. Completion of this project will create a single acute hospital site in Mid Essex, providing first class facilities for the local population.

The project comprises a new 43,000m² acute building complete with infrastructure and landscaping and associated parking provisions and will connect to the existing facility via a new atrium space and entrance foyer.

This new facility will be complete by August 2010 and will provide;

  • more than 330 beds

  • five day case operating theatres and three endoscopy rooms

  • an A&E department

  • a maternity department with two operating theatres

  • a neonatal intensive care unit

  • a rooftop helipad.

The existing hospital will remain in use throughout the construction period, with landscaping, road improvements and other external works being completed in 2011.

Ruth May, Chief Executive of the Mid Essex Hospital Trust, said: “It’s a delight and an honour to be here today to celebrate the structural completion of our new hospital wing.  It is wonderful to see the building come out of the ground and to know that we will have a new hospital in which to treat our patients in just over one year’s time.  I would like to thank all of my colleagues who have been involved in this project for all of their hard work and dedication in making this happen, especially David Bullock – the former chairman and Andrew Pike  - the former chief executive who were responsible for driving this project forward.”

Lionel Christolomme, Managing Director of Bouygues UK, said: “Achieving structural completion in such a short space of time is the result of a fantastic team effort and I would like to thank everybody who has helped us to reach this important stage of the hospital’s development. Team work is integral to the success of this project and I have no doubt that the excellent working relationship we have with our partners will be sustained throughout the remaining 15 months of construction and beyond.”
