Fire-fighters help cool cubs
Local fire-fighters have donated £1,000 to a new children's prevention campaign based at the St Andrew's Centre in Broomfield Hospital, aimed at reducing burns and scalds.
The Cool Cubs Club Scald Prevention Campaign was set up six months ago by Sue Petit, Jane Taylor, Kayleen Engelsman and Nakul Patel from the burns outpatients department. The aim of the club is to provide education to the public to increase awareness on the dangers of hot liquids and how to be safer when in the home or out and about with children.
Jane Taylor said “Working on the burns unit, we have seen first hand the devastating effect that a burn injury can cause to a child and their family. We see so many children on the unit with scalds, many of which could have been prevented so we feel it is vital to educate about safety around hot liquids as much as possible.”
With the funds already raised the team have been able to develop an information leaflet to be distributed around the local area, but they hope the campaign will soon spread much further.
Jane continues: “We are thrilled the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service have chosen to support our campaign, the extra funds will help us to further extend our scald education campaign to schools, nurseries, libraries and mother and baby groups and hopefully educate on limiting the risks of scalds. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the fire service for their support, and we look forward to further opportunities to raise awareness with them in the future"
