Trust’s pathology department gets the quality stamp
Staff at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford are celebrating after gaining the stamp of approval for their services in pathology.
The approval, from Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) (UK) Ltd demonstrates that the pathology laboratories are not only operating to the highest standards in the profession, but also have formal systems in place to ensure they are continually seeking opportunities for further improvement.
The Immunology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry laboratories at Broomfield Hospital were assessed by independent external auditors and found to be compliant with the requirements of the Clinical Pathology Accreditation Standard. The scheme is managed by CPA (UK) Ltd - the external accreditation body charged to oversee UK pathology departments and verify their ability to provide a service of high quality. The Trust’s cellular pathology department have also recently been awarded full accreditation from the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) UK Ltd.
Dr Vijoy Chowdhury, Haematology Consultant at Broomfield Hospital, said:” We are delighted to have received this accreditation. This is really good news for our staff, patients and the Trust. Gaining this accreditation means we have demonstrated that we are providing a service of the highest quality within the pathology directorate.”
Gaining the CPA is a lengthy process and involves a lot of time and hard work from many people. As well as being able to provide top quality pathology services the department also has to demonstrate that it has a quality management system in place that all staff are aware of and adhere to and that the department upholds professional values.
Dr Chowdhury adds: “We have our own quality policy which demonstrates we are committed to providing a service of the highest quality and shall take into account the needs of all our users, both clinicians and patients. Even though we have gained our accreditation it doesn’t end here. We are constantly monitored so we need to ensure all of our high standards are maintained. This includes the continuing professional development for our staff and maintaining both manual and computerised records of our quality systems. A lot of this is what we already have in place within the pathology department."
