Patients benefit from £20,000 charity donation

Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford has purchased some specialist equipment to help in the detection of cancer, thanks to a £20,000 donation from the Christine Willet Trust.

The Trust, which was set up in memory of Christine Willett, who died from cancer in 1993, raises money for hospitals across Essex.  Colin Willett explained: "When my late wife, Christine, died from cancer one of her last wishes was that all her assets should be used to help other cancer patients in Essex.  In the last 17 years we have raised over £150,000 which has been shared amongst seven hospitals in Essex.  We are pleased to be able to make this particular donation to Broomfield Hospital to help cancer patients in mid Essex."

The money was used to purchase a state-of-the-art narrow band imaging endoscope which detects abnormalities, such as cancer, in the gastrointestinal tract.  Mr Sri Kadirkamanathan, consultant surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, said: "We are delighted that the Christine Willett Trust has made this donation to enable us to buy this specialist equipment.  The endoscope uses blue/green light to significantly enhance the surgeon's view of the surface and underlying tissues in the gastrointestinal tract, making earlier detection of cancer possible."
