New Trust Chair appointed at Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust

Professor Sheila Salmon has been appointed by the Appointments Commission as the new Chair of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust for a period of four years from Thursday 1 April 2010.  Sheila replaces Mike Adams who has served as the Interim Trust Chair since May 2009.

Sheila, who was previously chair of the North East Essex Primary Care Trust, has more than 30 years' comprehensive experience in health and social care and has been the Dean of Health at Anglia Ruskin University.  She has represented the Nursing and Midwifery Council on numerous quality and standards visits to British Universities and their partner NHS Trusts.  Sheila holds an appointment as Emeritus Professor of Health Services Development and has considerable previous experience both as an Appointed Foundation Trust Governor and as a Non-Executive Director.

On her appointment Professor Salmon voiced her excitement about her new role.  “It is a fresh leadership challenge for me and one that I am relishing with keen anticipation.   It is an exciting future brimming over with opportunities and challenges.  Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is renowned for the excellent service that it provides to the people in the communities that we serve.   It is staffed by skilled and caring individuals working across the service in highly committed and dedicated teams.  I feel hugely privileged to join the Trust as Chairman and look forward to building and realising the future together”.

“Coming with my experience of regulation, emergency services and commissioning, coupled with a strong background in learning, research and development, it will be fascinating to bring those insights to my new role and to contribute to the work of a leading provider of specialist and acute healthcare services.  Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust aspires to be more than a District General Hospital and to deliver excellence in all that it does.  We must move forward with imagination and confidence to fully realise this vision”.

Keith Pearson, Chairman of NHS East of England, said: “I am very pleased that someone of Sheila’s calibre has taken on this role. Her more than 30 years experience within the healthcare sector will be a huge asset in helping us to deliver our vision to be the best health service in the country and in taking Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust forward.  I am very much looking forward to working with Sheila for a further four years.

“I would also like to extend my thanks to Mike Adams who has done a terrific job in his role as interim Chair since May 2009. He has shown enormous commitment and dedication to the role and I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Graham Ramsay, Chief Executive of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust, said:

”I am delighted to welcome Shelia as our new Trust chair.  She brings with her a wealth of experience, both as a Chair of an NHS Trust and from her own work and experience in health and social care.  . Sheila will provide strong leadership to help drive the Trust forward over the coming years to meet our ambitions for the future.   I look forward to working with her.”

This appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments code of practice.  All non executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Sheila has not declared any political activity in the past five years, but she does hold the position of the Ambassador for Public Appointments at the Government Equalities Office. She will receive remuneration of £39,400 per annum.

Mid Essex Hospital Services runs Broomfield and St John’s hospitals and provides acute hospital based services to a population of approximately 360,000 people who live in and around the towns of Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon and Witham.  It also hosts regional plastics, head and neck and upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) surgical services and a supra regional burns service to a population of 9.8 million.
