Mid Essex Hospitals Receives Key to new £148m PFI Hospital Wing
On Friday 6 August, Mid Essex Hospital and construction and services company Bouygues UK celebrated the official handover of Broomfield’s brand new £148m PFI hospital wing.
A short ceremony was held to mark the occasion which means that the building has now been handed over from Bouygues UK to Mid Essex Hospital services - although Bouygues UK will continue to manage the building’s facilities in the long term – for the building to be fully prepared internally before it can start to receive patients in September.
Graham Ramsay, chief executive of mid Essex Hospital services NHS Trust, said:” I am very proud of this brand new hospital building; it brings state of the art hospital facilities to the people of mid Essex and beyond. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard on all aspects of the project, especially Bouygues UK – our private sector partner who were responsible for the construction.”
“Despite the construction work being completed the hard work is far from over as over the coming weeks hospital staff will be finalising the arrangements to move into the new hospital and we will be preparing the new building ready to receive the first patients at the beginning of October.”
Completion of this project creates a single acute hospital site in mid Essex, providing first class facilities for the local population. The project comprises a new 43,000m² acute building complete with infrastructure and landscaping and associated parking provisions. The new building will connect to the existing facility via the new atrium space and entrance foyer.
This new facility provides:
-
more than 300 beds
-
five day case operating theatres and three endoscopy rooms
-
an A&E department
-
a maternity department with two operating theatres
-
a neonatal intensive care unit
-
a rooftop helipad
-
A new pharmacy and dispensary
Planning for the new PFI hospital wing started back in 2000. Final approval for the Scheme was achieved in 2007 with construction of the new wing starting in December of that year. The structural completion of the new building happened in May 2009.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Bouygues UK Director Ian Gunter said:
“We are enormously proud to be handing over this building today, just 32 months after the construction programme at Broomfield began. We are very grateful to the Trust, the PFI team and to everyone else involved in getting this project off the ground and enabling the local population to benefit from leading-edge clinical services”.
The public will get the chance to view the new facilities for themselves at a public open day to be held on Sunday 12 September 2010.
