Extra special delivery for Trust midwife
One of Mid Essex Hospital’s long standing midwives reached a huge milestone in her career last month, when she delivered her 1,000th baby at the maternity unit at St Peter’s Hospital.
Baby Evelyn May Edwards became Mhairi Cochrane’s 1,000th delivery when she was born on July 13th to proud parents, Samantha and Jonathan Edwards. Samantha, from Chelmsford, said: “I’d never met Mhairi until I went into labour, but when I found how many babies she’d delivered I knew I was in safe hands! I couldn’t fault any of the care I received, it’s like a home from home here and it was great to deliver Evelyn in such a relaxed environment.”
Mhairi, who first qualified as a midwife in January of 1976 and began working at St Peter’s in 1996, said: “I trained as a nurse, and when I completed the midwifery course I found it was something I enjoyed and wanted to continue with. I still remember my first delivery, which was very nerve racking but a great experience.”
Having worked as a midwife for over 30 years, Mhairi has seen a lot of changes. She continues: “Over the years the role of the midwife has developed to take on a lot more responsibility, which makes it a lot more hands on. I really enjoy my job, particularly as it’s serving the local community and I often get to see mum’s out and about with babies I’ve delivered which is extremely rewarding.“
Staff at the St Peter’s maternity unit are also celebrating their 200th delivery so far this year, which is a 20% increase on this time last year. 43 babies were delivered in July alone which is a record for the unit.
Wendy Patarou, midwifery team leader at St Peter’s said: “Our growing number of births shows what an incredible job the team here do, and is testament to the care they provide to new parents and their babies.”
