New specialised clinic for couples having problems conceiving a baby

Couples in Mid Essex who are having problems conceiving a baby can now get special advice from the professionals at a new clinic at St John’s hospital in Chelmsford.

The new sub fertility clinic is run by consultant gynaecologist - Mr Adel Razek, assisted by nurse Marzena Ochalska.

Mr Razek said:” New NHS guidelines state that every couple trying for a baby who have had three years of unexplained infertility for no apparent cause are eligible for three IVF cycles on the NHS.

“Previously couples coming to the hospital for sub fertility or infertility treatment had to attend a general gynaecology clinic which we thought wasn’t appropriate as it didn’t give them enough time to discuss the issues with myself or provide access to specialist nursing support and counselling.  That’s why we have introduced these specialist clinics.”

The clinic runs every other week and provides couples with accurate and up to date information about their fertility options.

Mr Razek continues:” During the consultation we carry out some basic investigations to try and determine the cause of the sub fertility.  Depending on the outcome we then decide if the couple can be treated locally or if they need to attend one of five tertiary fertility centres that specialise in this treatment.  If the IVF treatment is successful and the lady becomes pregnant, then they can come back to St John’s for their antenatal care under our direction.”

Nurse, Marzena Ochalska, plays an important role in the new clinics.

Marzena said:” My role is to assist Mr Razek with the clinic by taking the couple’s history and acting as the link person between appointments.  I am currently taking a course in understanding human infertility so am gaining more knowledge all of the time.  I am always at the end of the phone so the couples have someone to talk to if they have additional questions.  This can be a very stressful time for couples, so we think it is important that we provide them with as much support as possible.”

A monthly clinic in Braintree, run by Mr Robarts (consultant gynaecologist); will start later this year to ensure all sub fertility patients in the area are seen in one specialised clinic.  All referrals to the clinics are from GPs or via the choose and book system.
