School children set up a forest camp in hospital woodland

A group of school children from Southminster Cof E Primary School celebrated the end of their six week forest school project by spending the day in woodland at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

During the day the children set up a forest camp and emptied their bug hotels, as well as den building and getting the chance to explore the woodland.  All the activities in the forest school project are based on topics the children cover in the national curriculum.

Paul Allen, consultant aboriculturist, who worked with the school on the project said: “The day was a great success.  It gave the children a chance to spend the day in a real woodland environment and enjoy the surroundings.  A large part of the day was exploring and free play, which we think is a very important part of the project.”

The hospital trust has developed a woodland project to manage two woodland areas in the grounds of Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.  The trust is working closely with Chelmsford Brought Council and the Forestry Commission on this project.
