Extra special donation helps cancer patients

Cancer patients at Broomfield Hospital will benefit after a former patient donated £4,500 to the chemotherapy unit.

Two years ago, 20 year old Hayley Dyer from Maldon received treatment at the unit for cancer of the larynx.  Hayley said: “It is my way of saying thank you to all the staff for everything they did for me”.  Friends and family helped Hayley raise the money from various fundraising events ranging from sponsored bike rides to friends having their hair shaved, charity dance nights and auctions.

Lisa Villiers, Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, said: “I am delighted to see Hayley looking so well.  At 18 Hayley was one of our youngest patients and I know it was a really difficult time for everyone.  This donation is amazing and we are truly grateful to Hayley and her family, but what really makes today even more special for me is seeing Hayley walking through the door – a confident, lovely young lady”

The cancer care unit use charitable funds to provide extra medical equipment and to enhance the surroundings for cancer patients and their visitors.  Patients also benefit from supportive care including reflexology sessions, counselling and patient information.
