Golfing ladies support the breast care unit
Ladies from the Chelmsford golf club have scored a 'hole in one' for the breast care service at Mid Essex hospitals by raising more than £2000.
It was the idea of Mrs Pam Nicol from Writtle to support the unit throughout her captain's year, Mrs Nicol joked that her handicap wasn't all that brilliant and she felt rather a fraud having been nominated as “captain” but her year had been made even more enjoyable knowing that the ladies fundraising efforts for the breast unit had been so successful.
The ladies, from the club based at Widford Lodge, raised the money from various events including a dress in pink tournament. Mrs Nicol adds: “This was a particularly fun tournament and everyone entered into the spirit of the event - the golf course looked like a huge sea of pink”.
The breast care service, currently based at the Chelmsford and Essex Centre, will move to the new PFI hospital wing at Broomfield in the autumn.
Professor Paul Sauven, consultant surgeon gratefully accepted the donation and explained: “There is a special ambience about the C&E Centre and with these extra funds it will help us recreate this for our ladies when we move to our new and larger facilities at Broomfield Hospital”
Trust Chairman, Professor Sheila Salmon, thanked Mrs Nicol and her lady golfers for their marvellous efforts and said: “This is an incredibly generous donation and means a great deal to us all, but just as important is your support and recognition of the invaluable work our medical team provides to all our ladies who come here for treatment and screening.”
The breast care unit use charitable funds to provide extra medical equipment and to enhance the surroundings for patients receiving treatment and breast screening. Patients benefit too from support and information and with the addition of pc’s in the waiting room, staff will be able to direct ladies to the most appropriate web-sites for that extra help and advice on line.
