Biking grannies support the neonatal unit
Fifty daring grannies took to the roads of Essex on motorbikes recently to raise money for the St John's hospital neonatal unit.
The annual “Goldwings Granny Run” involved the ladies riding pillion on the back of Honda Goldwing Motorbikes from Broomfield Hospital to Mersea Island and back.
Sheila Salmon, the newly appointed Chairman of Mid Essex Hospitals, and her granddaughter India were among the family and friends who turned out to wave them on their way. Sheila said: "It’s been a real thrill to witness these impressive bikes setting off, and on behalf of the Trust I would like to thank all the riders who have made this all possible, and of course all of the adventurous grandmothers taking part in the event”
After weaving through the Essex countryside, and causing quite a stir with the locals, the convoy of gleaming motorbikes arrived to a warm welcome at Mersea Island where the ladies and their bikers had a chance to soak up some sunshine before heading back to Broomfield.
Pat Schorah, who has taken part in the last three granny runs, said "I always enjoy the granny run and this year was no exception, the bikers always make sure everyone has a great time. It's an ideal chance for us grandmothers to show that no matter how old you are, you can still have fun! It's particularly fun for me as I usually use a motorised scooter to get around, so these bikes certainly go much faster! To know the money raised is going to such a good cause makes the day even more enjoyable"
It is anticipated that the event will raise over £5,000 to buy advanced life saving equipment for the neo natal unit, used to treat pre term, low birth weight and unwell babies during their first few days of life.
