Your chance to keep a piece of history from St John’s hospital
If you know of a child who was a patient on Sunshine Ward at St John’s hospital, then you might like to keep a piece of history when it closes its doors later this week.
The ceiling of the ward is covered in tiles that have been decorated by former patients during their stay in hospital to brighten up the area. These tiles are looking for their rightful owners.
Kay Gammage, divisional manager for women’s and children’s services, said:” The tiles have been such an important part of Sunshine ward for a long time and hold special memories for a lot of people, so we didn’t want to lose this important piece of history when the ward moves to Broomfield. If anyone knows a child who may have decorated a tile in the past, or if you were a former patient who would like your tile, then we are asking people to collect them before we move. We have also photographed all of the ceiling tiles to make a display on the new children’s ward at Broomfield so they are not forgotten.”
The tiles will be available for collection on Sunshine ward at St John’s hospital between 11am and 3pm on Thursday 18 November. Alternatively, if you would like a photograph of any of the tiles please contact the trust’s charities office on 514559.
