New look Hospital garden is unveiled
The results of a lot of hard work of some kind hearted volunteers was unveiled last week when a new look garden was unveiled at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Chelmsford, Cllr and Mrs Alan Arnot, officially opened the new look therapies garden that had received a major makeover. The work was led by members of Chelmsford 41 club and involved members from Round Table, Tangent and Ladies Circle. Commenting on the garden the Mayor said: “ As a Hospital patient myself it is lovely to come along and see another element of hospital life. The garden looks lovely and I am sure it will be enjoyed by many people.”
Trust Chairman, Professor Sheila Salmon, thanked the members of the Chelmsford 41 club for all of their hard work and the Mayor and Mayoress for supporting the project, she said: “.This really is a new beginning, as we have restored the garden back to how it should be. This means it can now be enjoyed by many different people and will really make a big difference to them. We couldn’t have done it without the help of these kind volunteers and I would like to pass on sincere thanks on behalf of the Trust for all that they have done.”
The garden makeover started on Monday 30th January and was the idea of Alison, wife of Terry Douglas, who is chair of the Chelmsford 41 club. Terry, who turned the idea into reality and drove the project forward said:” We were delighted to take this on as one of our community service projects. I would like to thank the hospital for allowing us access to the garden. I would also like to thank all 42 members of the Chelmsford Round Table Family who took part in the project and to the staff on the wards who have been very patient with us whilst we have been working here. I hope the new look garden will make a real difference to staff and patients alike.”
The garden is already being used by patients from the wards and the therapies department. It is hoped that some staff will even be able to hold their team meetings out there in the summer.
So what's next for the Chelmsford 41 club? Terry adds: “Now this project is finished we have been asked by the Hospital to turn our attention to giving another Hospital garden a makeover. We have agreed plans with the Hospital for the garden that is adjacent to the Phoenix children’s ward. We are hoping that work can start in earnest in the children’s garden in the next few weeks.”
