From Little Acorns...
The Trust had some very welcome visitors last week (Friday 28th), the year 3 children from Southminster Church of England Primary School.
The visit was part of the ongoing woodland management that is taking place at Broomfield Hospital. Part of the planning for the new hospital wing and centralisation of services included the planned management of the woodland areas surrounding the hospital.
Sharon Hosegood, the woodland manager for the project, has worked closely with the children in promoting awareness of forests and woodlands, helping them to achieve ‘Forest School’ status. This achievement shows that the children, and the school, are aware of the need to preserve and enhance our natural environment.
On a bitterly cold morning, Sharon, the children, teachers and helpers, were joined by Professor Sheila Salmon, Trust Chairman and Mr Ian Hughes, a local councillor and the tree warden for Broomfield Hospital.
The effort was really worthwhile, potted holes soon filled with young trees, trees that future generations of visitors, staff and patients can enjoy.
Professor Sheila Salmon said:
“It is lovely to be here, to watch the young children enjoying healthy outdoor activities at the same time as contributing to the beautiful woodland we have here at Broomfield.
These trees will be here to be enjoyed by future generations for many, many years.
I also thank Sharon for helping us make the most of our wonderful woodland, and for working with the children to help their understanding of their natural surroundings”
Sharon Hosegood, whose company have a long term contract in the woodland management, said:
“The hospital is situated in a wonderful area here, surrounded by acres of unspoilt woodland. We have been working closely with the Trust to make sure it can be enjoyed by all visitors to the site, patients and staff.
I would like to say a big well done to the children for bringing their energy and enthusiasm along, and helping with the planting of so many trees. I would also like to thank councillor Ian Hughes, who works tirelessly as tree warden here at Broomfield”.
The morning ended with our chairman leaving to attend an event in the maternity unit and the children tucking into well deserved bars of kit-kat and juice.
All in all, a very good mornings work, and a chance to see, that if you look around you, you will see there are indeed many, many good things happening at Broomfield.
