Women needed to support new mums with their breastfeeding
If you are a lady who has breastfed and are interested in supporting new mums then read on.
Central Essex Community Services, Children Centres and Mid Essex Hospitals Maternity Services are working together to deliver a Breastfeeding Peer Support Programme. The aim of the programme is to help increase the uptake of breastfeeding by providing support and encouragement to new mothers, that the midwives don’t always have the time to do. Denise Gray, lead midwife for infant feeding at Broomfield Hospital said: “We know that it can sometimes be difficult to breastfeed, even though it is best for the baby. That’s where the peer supporters come in as they can provide the new mothers with support and encouragement as well as giving up to date information.”
Anyone interested in becoming a peer supporter will be offered a full training programme, which will run over four Saturdays (10am-2pm) free of charge ( although there will be no crèche facilities for children – babies in arms will be allowed).
The training programme is due to start January 2012, so if you are interested and want to find out more please contact Amanda Wheeler Breastfeeding Counsellor for the NCT on 01245 461191 (email martin.amanda@hotmail.co.uk) or Denise Gray Lead Midwife in Infant Feeding Mid Essex Hospitals on 01245 513676 (email denise.gray@meht.nhs.uk)
