New 24 hour opening for the maternity day Assessment Unit at Broomfield Hospital
The maternity Day Assessment Unit (DAU) at Broomfield Hospital is now available for women as a 24 hour, 7 day a week service.
The unit, which previously only opened until 8pm, treats women who have problems with their pregnancy including raised blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension abdominal pain or urinary tract infections. It also carries out low risk inductions and sees women who have premature rupture of membranes before 37 weeks gestation and women with spontaneous rupture after 37 weeks who are not in labour.
Meredith Deane, head of midwifery at Mid Essex Hospitals, said: “It is very good news for our patients that our opening hours have been extended. We are now able to treat women 24 hours a day on the unit rather than having to transfer any patient who needed to stay longer into another area.”
Women attending the unit can be monitored or treated and then go home the same day, rather than having to stay in hospital.
As well as women being referred to the unit by the GP, community midwife or consultant they can also self refer if they have any problems with their pregnancy and are more than 16 weeks pregnant.
The contact telephone number for the unit remains unchanged (01245) 513355.
