Broomfield Hospital’s maternity unit celebrates first birthday

Some very important guests returned to Broomfield Hospital recently to attend a first birthday party for the maternity unit.

The babies were amongst the first to be born at Broomfield hospital one year ago.

Lucy Ellis from Braintree was born at 8am on the 19th November 2010.  Her mum Ruth commented: “It was a fantastic service, just like being in a hotel; I think that Lucy was about the third baby born at the new unit – what an honour.”

Max Prestney from Chelmsford was born on 21 November 2010.  Dad Mark said it was a waiting game to find out if Max would be born at St John’s Hospital or Broomfield as he was a St John’s baby himself.

Meredith Deane, head of midwifery for Mid Essex Hospital services NHS Trust, said: “Maternity staff hold fond memories of St John’s, but I think that the new facilities we have here at Broomfield are fantastic.  The staff have worked extremely hard to settle into their new working environment and we have been busier than ever.  Over 3500 babies have been born at the Broomfield maternity unit in the last year alone.”

Erin Ellis was the last baby to be born at St John’s Hospital on 18 November 2011.  Her mum Sonya Newby said that they felt very special and Erin’s middle name is Grace, after the Grace Bartlett theatre at St John’s where she was born by caesarean section.

During the party the babies were presented with presents from the National Childbirth Trust and a special cake was cut to mark the occasion.
