The Medicines Information Service

The staff providing the Medicines Information (M.I) service will attempt to answer all relevant medicine based enquiries.

The service is available from Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, and may be contacted by telephone, e-mail or by writing to or visiting the Pharmacy department at Broomfield Hospital.

Whilst M.I at Mid Essex is a small team we endeavour to have at least one member of staff available during opening times.  When this is not possible there is a voicemail system which is checked regularly.

M.I accept enquiries from a range of people including all staff within the Trust Hospitals and members of the public.

The range of enquiries M.I deal with tend to fall into the following categories:

• Medicine Identification

• Alternative Medicine

• Drugs in Pregnancy

• Administration/Dosage

• Drug Interactions/ IV compatibility

• Drugs in Breast-feeding

• Pharmaceutical

• Travel advice

• Any other medicine related enquiries

M.I also currently provide the following additional services:

• Some journal/reference requests

• Training of pharmacy, medical and nursing staff

• Facilitate the yellow card reporting system

• Area Prescribing Committee (APC) reviews – drug reviews for formulary consideration

• Bulletins – Medicine based information bulletins

• MEDILINE – M.I service to general public
