Children's Assessment Unit

The children's assessment unit is an 8 bedded unit situated within Phoenix Unit. The unit provides urgent assessment for children and young people who are referred from GP's, Emergency Departments and Community health professional.

What to Expect

On arrival at the unit a senior nurse will assess your child and will prioritise the urgency of a medical examination and treatment. While you are in the assessment unit the nurse will monitor your child and may initiate some treatments prior to the doctor's assessment. We aim to have assessed all children within 4 hours and a decision will be made about the plan of care for your child.  Your child may need longer observation within the assessment unit before a final decision is made.

Food and Drink

We are able to provide a range of baby milks and drinks, hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks for your child while they are being assessed.

What to Bring

  • Baby bag with nappies etc.

  • Some of the child's favourite toys

  • Toiletries for parents an child.

  • Medication, tablets or inhalers

  • Favourite soft drinks

  • Children's health care record book

Play and Recreation

Play and recreation is an important part of a child’s development. A play specialist will support children and young people in play and recreation. The unit has a small play waiting room with a range of toys and games.

Discharge

On discharge home a letter will given to you and one will be sent to your GP/local doctor explaining all treatments the child has received. Parents will be given any medication for the child. You will also be given a telephone number which you can use to contact the unit if you have any concerns about your child within 24 hours of discharge. Outpatient and follow up will be discussed with the doctor prior to discharge. If an appointment is required it will be sent to you in the post.
