Neonatal Unit (405 Level 4)

The Neonatal Unit, offers intensive care, high dependency and special care.  It is situated on  level 4  and is managed by Sister Toni Laing and her team.

What to Expect

Parents will be offered close support from the neonatal and midwifery team. There will be opportunity to discuss the baby's care with a consultant  through the named nurse caring for your baby. The baby's hospital and nursing notes will be shared with other health professionals directly involved in its care. Premature babies are very fragile and benefit from minimal handling. Parents are encouraged to participate in their baby’s care. The nursing staff will teach and support parents in learning to care for their premature or sick baby.

All babies in the maternity service and neonatal unit are offered neonatal newborn hearing screening. We offer rooming in facilities prior to discharge home for parents. We are unable to give an exact discharge date as all babies are different, a rough guide is expected date of delivery for premature babies.

The neonatal unit is a teaching environment for both medical and nursing students.  For medical students and those doctors already qualified the Neonatal Unit provides the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in the care of the preterm and or sick newborn.  For nursing students it will be those undertaking children’s training, midwifery training and post graduate special and intensive care of the newborn course.

What to Bring

Parents are asked to provide nappies, cotton buds and cotton wool everything else is provided.  Mothers are encouraged to breast feed/express breast milk for their small babies, breast feeding facilities are setup in a dedicated breast feeding/expressing room on the unit.

Facilities

There are two, en suite, bedrooms available for parents use prior to their baby's discharge, should they choose to stay.  The staff will be happy to provide further information regarding use of these rooms.
