Cancer and Palliative Care
The Trust has a large team of health professionals who provide multi-disciplinary care for patients with suspected and confirmed diagnosis of cancer. The Trust is part of the Essex Cancer Network that serves a population of approximately one million and therefore has strong ties with Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Colchester Hospitals University Foundation Trust and Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals.
The Trust's cancer services include surgery, outpatient chemotherapy and specialist palliative care. The Trust is also a designated surgical centre for Upper GI cancer and Head and Neck cancer.
Services
Multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) are organised in site-specific tumour groups as recommended in the NHS Cancer Plan (DOH 2000). As well as these site-specific teams there is the Specialist Palliative Care team (Macmillan Nurses), a very active outpatient chemotherapy service (Chemotherapy Day Unit) and a large clinical research trials team.
Essex Cancer Network
MEHT is part of the Essex Cancer Network, and the purpose of the network, which was formed in 2007, is to improve services for patients and ensure equity of treatment.
