The Coloproctology and Stoma Care Department provides treatment, management and surgical options for patients with colorectal disorders.
Services
Coloproctology
Is a distinct surgical specialty which offers patient’s treatment, management and surgical options for colorectal disorders including bowel cancer.
Stoma care
Stoma is a derivative of a Greek word meaning mouth or opening. A stoma is constructed from a portion of large or small bowel, brought out of the abdomen on to the surface through a surgical incision. Patients often refer to a stoma as a ‘bag’, the ‘bag’ being necessary to collect the discharge from the bowel. A stoma may be temporary or permanent.
The department
The Colorectal Surgeons each have a weekly surgical clinic at Broomfield Hospital. Referrals to these clinics are either from the patient’s GP or from other specialists’. Each surgeon has a specific operating day.
Patients are usually required to attend for a pre-operative assessment the week before their operation. Most patients requiring colorectal surgery are admitted to Ward B6, and all in-patients are monitored daily by members of the colorectal team.
The Clinical Nurse Specialists also play a crucial role in the care and management of people with bowel cancer, both before and after surgery.
The Colorectal Team works in collaboration with other relevant specialists, both within and outside the Trust. This multidisciplinary team meet weekly to discuss new patient’s pre-treatment screening results. Decisions are taken on the most appropriate treatment pathway and the outcome discussed with the patient at their next outpatient consultation. Following treatment all patients’ are monitored by a surveillance team.
