About the Department
Our department in based in our new Urology Centre in the South Wing of Broomfield Hospital. Most of our out-patient consultations and diagnostic tests take place here. We have found huge benefits in the co-location of our out-patient consulting rooms, diagnostic rooms and offices in one area.

Pre-Assessment Clinics
We work very closely with our anaesthetic colleagues and if you are advised to have an operation you will also be seen in the anaesthetic pre-operative assessment unit. They have taken forward the use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing as a way of improving peri-operative care in major surgery.
New for 2011-2012
Following the move into our Urology Centre, in 2011 we launched dedicated one stop urology clinics. The aim of these is to conduct as many investigations as possible during the same visit as the initial out-patient consultation. This is more efficient and saves multiple visits to the hospital for our patients. This sometimes requires a visit to the department lasting several hours whilst we conduct tests and investigations including:
We may ask you to have some tests performed before coming to the clinic. If so, we will send you information on this before your appointment.
At the end of the visit, most patients will have received a diagnosis and had their treatment options discussed with them. If you need surgery you will meet our admissions officer before leaving the centre.
Following feedback from our patients we now try to offer patients seen in our one stop clinics the opportunity to leave the hospital with a copy of the clinic letter sent to their GP, if they wish.
Later in 2011 we plan to launch new services for recurrent superficial bladder tumours whereby these tumours are treated with a laser in outpatients, thus avoiding the need for hospital admission.
We are also developing an Information Hub area in our Urology Centre for patients to learn more about urological conditions.
The Urology Department is also contributing to the team developing Enhanced Recovery Programmes after major surgery at Broomfield Hospital.

Training and Research and Audit
The Urology Department at Broomfield Hospital is part of the training rotation for Specialist Registrars in the London Deanery. Urologists in training spend one year with us as part of the North Thames Training Scheme. Other doctors in training, including those on the Foundation Training Scheme after leaving Medical School spend time with us and also doctors in Basic Surgical Training Programmes (CT).
In addition, we offer specially designed study modules (SSMs) for medical students who wish to gain additional exposure and experience of Urology.
Patient Support Groups
In 2010 we established a Prostate Cancer Support group.
This group meets every last Monday of the month in the Medical Academic Unit at Broomfield Hospital, theatre 2 at 18:30hrs -20:30hrs.
We have had very positive feedback from the participants and are looking to establish other groups relating to other urological diseases.
Come and have a chat and refeshments, partners also welcome.
If you would like to contact the Patient Information Group, please contact Chris Stubbings, Urology Nurse Practitioner.

Our Wards
Most of our in-patient care is on Rayne Ward (telephone number is 01245 513919). Patients who are coming to Broomfield for Day Surgery Operations may be admitted to the Theatre Assessment Unit.
Rayne ward visiting is from 14:00 to 20:00 and visitors are advised to contact with the nurse in charge if they are unable to visit out of these times - we always welcome visitors who wish to come in and help relatives with food or bring in alternative diet and fluids.
Please Click Here for the Rayne Ward Information leaflet
For Heybridge Ward, where some of our patients will be staying, visiting times are: 1500-1600hrs and 1830 - 2000hrs seven days a week. The visiting times are restricted to these times as many patients having surgery get tired easily. If these times are not suitable , please contact the ward sister to arrange visiting outside of these hours. The protected meal time is from 17.30 - 18-30hrs to allow the patients to eat their meals without being disturbed . Doctors' ward rounds are usually in the morning at about 08.00hrs each day
Clinical Trials
We are actively participating in a number of National Clinical Trials studying urological diseases and we will discuss with eligible patients whether or not they would like to participate. These trials include:
-
Familial Prostate Cancer Study
-
STAMPEDE study for prostate cancer
-
LAMB study for upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma
-
SORCE study for kidney cancer
-
RADICALS study for prostate cancer
Clinical Audit
At any one time we will also be conducting audits assessing various aspects of our service to help us to check the quality of care we provide and improve care for the future.
