Postnatal Care

Care after birth (Postnatal care)

After your baby is born, a midwife will:

  • Monitor your wellbeing

  • Offer education and support for breastfeeding and caring for your new baby

  • Encourage you to rest

  • Talk with you about what you may expect as a new mother, and what is normal

If you require an overnight stay then you will be transferred to the postnatal ward an hour or two after the birth. There, midwives will provide most of your care.

If you do not require to stay in hospital you will be discharged directly from the labour ward or The Birthing Unit.  There is an option for you to transfer to St Peters if you would like to.

You will either be visited on the day of discharge if you have had an early transfer home or the following day if you have had an overnight stay in hospital or at St Peters.   You may receive additional support from our Community Maternity Care Assistants, who can help you with breastfeeding and caring for your new baby.
