Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA)

St Andrews Centre provides a comprehensive breast reconstruction service for the following breast clinics, Southend, Basildon, Colchester, Chelmsford, Harlow, Ilford and Whipps Cross.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) meetings were established in 2004 by Breast Reconstruction Nurses, Christine Moxon and Jayne Knight, who recognised that there is a great need for women, newly diagnosed with breast cancer, to be able to meet and talk to other women who have been through the same experience.

Meetings are open to women who are considering immediate or delayed breast reconstruction, and are also attended by women who have had breast reconstruction and who are at various stages of treatment, including nipple reconstruction and nipple areola micro-pigmentation (nipple tattooing).  Many of those attending are happy to speak openly of their experiences.

The meetings are held once a month in an informal and relaxed atmosphere and light refreshments are provided.

You are welcome to bring along a female relative or friend for support.  Our Breast Reconstruction Nurses are always on hand to answer questions you may have about any type of breast reconstruction.

You will have the time to discuss surgery and to understand and consider the options open to you.  You can learn what surgery entails and discover the many types of support available to you and your family during surgery and after discharge.

Although your plastic surgeon will have explained all the details of the surgery, it can often be very difficult to absorb the information and formulate the questions you want to ask.  Many women have said that they feel more at ease when they are able to ask questions and express their concerns to another women.

BRA meetings offer :

• Direct access to women who have already benefited from surgery

• Answers to your questions from people with recent experience of the issues you are facing
