The Clinical Genetics Service

In some children who are deaf the cause may be genetic.  A referral is therefore often made where the cause is not obvious, or where there is a family history, to a consultant geneticist.  We have links with the clinical genetic department, Great Ormond Street Hospital. However, clinics are held locally at St. John’s Hospital to save families having to travel to London, the consultant visiting every six weeks from London.

These are qualified nurses with experience and training to work with all age groups in the community, many have specialist qualifications in child health.

They offer a wide range of services to families including support and advice on children’s development, special needs, sleeping patterns, feeding, general behaviour and safety.

They can also advise on day care for children under eight.
