Welcome to the Warner Knowledge & Education Centre
Mid Essex Hospital Trust management at Broomfield Hospital have long realised that informed staff deliver improved patient care, whether they are clinical or non-clinical. With a firm commitment to progressing the appropriate training and development of all staff, it’s no surprise to find a professionally-run Knowledge Education Centre on site, to assist staff achieve their professional goals.
On its present site, the Warner Knowledge Education Centre has served those seeking medical and clinical information since 1992. Prior to this date, it was installed in the Medical Academic Unit. Users can take advantage of a site that’s close to all amenities, yet retains an “off-site” feel, allowing focused and peaceful study periods.
Services
We are a health information resource for all staff working for the NHS within Essex. To use the services we offer, it is necessary to join us as a member. Casual users – including members of the public – may use the facilities onsite during working hours only at the discretion of the Manager.
We aim to provide the best health information provision that we can - within our set budget - in the Essex region. We aim to achieve this by superb customer service, and by working in co-operation with all other health information professionals in the Eastern Region.
We offer to our members: 24/7 access to the CAL Suite - this is located upstairs in the Warner KEC. It has a range of medical CDs, and DVDs for continuous e-learning. We have access to many electronic journal titles; details of these are available to members. We also offer a lending service; journals photocopy access; articles and books obtained if not held on site; help with searching for those in a hurry, or wanting the reassurance of a qualified information professional; and general information queries. We offer several training courses on searching - from Google to Dialog-DataStar.
Chargeable services include: lost items; overdue loans; internet access, CV printing; binding; personal photocopying; cd-roms burned; faxes sent – UK & overseas.
It provides a multidisciplinary service to ALL employees of the Trust, also to employees of other local trusts; and to primary care staff.

The Warner Knowledge Education Centre is situated behind the Medical Academic Unit.

We regret there is currently no access to the Warner outside these hours, though members may use the CAL Suite upstairs.
All staff are urged to register with the Warner when they begin working at the Trust.
The Warner KEC holds a core collection of medical, nursing, and healthcare texts, most of which can be borrowed. The Warner subscribes to major journals: members may also register with Athens, and thus gain access to the National Health Library’s collection of journals, texts, databases, and other reputable knowledge sources. Training is available to make best use of this facility. The Warner also offers an inter-library loan service, and internet/private email facilities.
Borrowed books may be returned out of hours to the red box, located outside the Medical Academic Unit.
