About the Trust

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust was established as an NHS Trust in 1992. The Trust provides local elective and emergency services to 380,000 people living in and around the districts of Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree.

The Trust also provides a county-wide plastics, head and neck and upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgical service to a population of 3.4 million and a supra regional burns service to a population of 9.8 million, and employs nearly 5,000 staff.

In November 2010 the Trust opened the PFI funded hospital wing. This enabled the Trust to centralise the majority of its services onto the Broomfield Hospital site.

A committed and experienced clinically led management structure is now in place to deliver the Trust’s vision and quality driven strategy of “Care, Excel, Innovate”.

Good progress has been made in delivering against the commitments set out in the strategy.

From April 1st 2014 services at Braintree Community Hospital have been provided by MEHT, and we look forward to developing these services in the future and providing care for the people of Essex closer to their home.

As part of new governance arrangements between Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Trust, Mid Essex Hospitals Trust and Southend University Hospitals Trust, a Joint Working Board (JWB) has been established.  The JWB is made up of a committee of each of the three Trusts to which responsibilities have been delegated by each Trust Board.  JWB does not replace the three Trust Boards who remain ultimately accountable for the performance of each organisation.
