Revalidation for Nurses and Midwives in MEHT

The most significant change to regulation in a generation

All nurses and midwives in the UK are required to renew their registration every three years.

Revalidation commenced and went live on the 1st April 2016.

This means that everyone on the NMC register has to demonstrate they’re able to deliver care in a safe, effective and professional way

What is Revalidation?

Revalidation means that all nurses and midwives on the register has to demonstrate they are able to deliver care in a safe, effective and professional way. They will have to show they are staying up to date in their practice and living the values of the NMC Code by reflecting on their practice and engaging in discussions with colleagues.

For the first time they have been required to demonstrate they have met all the requirements before they apply to renew their place on the register every three years.

Nearly 16000 nurses and midwives in the UK were the first to revalidate in April 2016.

Revalidation requirements focus on:

  • Up –to-date practice and professional development

  • Reflection on their practice, development in relation to the NMC Code

  • Engagement in professional discussions with other nurses and midwives

Revalidation will help to encourage a culture of sharing, reflection and improvement amongst nurses and midwives and will be a continuous process that nurses and midwives will have to engage with throughout their career. It will allow nurses and midwives to demonstrate that they practice safely and effectively, strengthening public confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions.

Revalidation is about promoting good practice across the whole population of nurses and midwives. It’s not an assessment of a nurse or midwife’s fitness to practice.

We are proud to say 100% of MEHT April registrants completed their revalidation by 31.3.16

The Trust continues to support staff through a variety of methods:

  • Information Hub (this is an online info hub which is available to all staff and contains information and resources to assist them to revalidate).

  • Revalidation Workshops which will allow staff to come along annd gain the knowledge they need to be able to revalidate effectively

  • Monthly Event Stand in our Atrium dedicated to Revalidation; where staff can come, talk, and seek advice they need to know to Revalidate

  • Confirmer Workshops – aimed at those confirming nurses and midwives have met  the requirements

  • Local guide on Revalidation available to all nurses and midwives in MEHT
