Congratulations to Kate Kerly who was crowned winner of the 2019 Broomfield Charity Bake Off.
Kate and her Malteser bunny cake took top prize from Jenna Twaites and her creation The Eggster. Ray Berris’ Chocolate Surprise was third.
Winner Kate, who is a health records team leader, won a hamper of baking goodies including a selection of artisan flours kindly donated by local millers Marriage’s.
Kate said: “I do like baking, and people in the office know that, but I didn’t expect to win. I’m very happy with the prize – that will keep me baking for a while.”
The competition was judged by the Friends’ Pauline Trodd and outgoing patient council chairman Robert Lee-Bird.
It was a sweet ending to Robert’s time as chair and he said: “The amount of work and effort everyone put in was amazing. The taste of the winning cake was superb. It was a worthy winner. We judged the cakes on appearance and flavour and although The Eggster was so moist and tasted lovely, the Malteser cake ever so slightly edged it.”
“We thought they were all so good,” added Pauline. “It was really hard to choose. I was very impressed with the quality of the entries, they were exceptional.”
All the competition entries were then sliced and sold to staff and members of the public in the atrium to raise money for the charity.
Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator for Mid Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “The competition was fantastic and all the cakes I tasted were delicious. I’d like to say a big thank you to Marriage’s for the prizes and to all the bakers who put so much time and effort into their bakes.”
