St Mary’s Shenfield triumph at charity choir competition

School choir competition

St Mary’s School from Shenfield were crowned champions as the annual Chelmsford and District Primary Schools Choir Competition reached an exciting finale.

The charity competition, organised by the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Phoenix, saw primary schools in mid Essex competing against each other in heats across the county before being whittled down to the best six.

Mid Essex Hospitals Charity was one of four good causes the competition raised funds for.

The final was held in front of packed auditorium at KEGS, Chelmsford, with each school singing two songs before joining together for an uplifting medley.

St Mary’s renditions of ‘A Little Can Change our World’ and ‘There Will Always be a Reason to Sing’ earned top marks from the judging panel and was enough to take the crown from runners-up St Michael’s School from Galleywood.

Deputy mayor Christine Garratt presented the winners with their prize and was overwhelmed by the quality of the performances: “What an absolutely fantastic evening. To see all these young people here this evening and the work they’ve put in, I can’t believe how disciplined they all are.

“The choirs were all winners, and how the judges chose between them must have been very difficult. This is the type of encouragement we need to give to young people. It gives them confidence and they should all be immensely proud of themselves.”

Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator for Mid Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “The schools were all brilliant and it was so great to see how much all the children were enjoying themselves. We’d also like to thank the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Phoenix for their valuable support.”
