Staff summer barbecue is a sizzling success

Mid Essex Hospitals Charity and the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) joined forces to serve lunch to over 2,300 staff at Broomfield Hospital.

The RRT - a charitable organisation who provide support for local communities and the emergency services - fired up their grills to feed the appreciative Broomfield workforce on a gloriously sunny afternoon on the hospital’s Wellbeing Terrace.

Staff queued round the block for a gourmet burger and drink whilst being entertained by the Chelmsford SDA youth choir and summer tunes from hospital radio.

Chelmsford MP Vicky Ford spent over an hour helping prepare the food with the RRT team and, for staff unable to leave their posts, the RRT delivered over 800 lunches to wards and departments across the hospital with the help of Mayor of Chelmsford Bob Massey.

There were also stalls in the Medical Academic Unit showcasing the work of the hospital’s Out to Africa team, Falls, Health and Safety, Sustainability, and Fire Safety.

Event organiser Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator at Mid Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “The Rapid Relief Team deserve a huge thank you from everyone at the hospital for their incredible generosity. To cook and serve over 2,300 lunches in just over three hours is amazing. It was fantastic to see so many members of staff enjoying the delicious food in the sunshine.

“The event we put on with RRT last Christmas was a huge success and today was even better – everyone who came down here had a great time, it was a real morale booster and no more than our staff deserve for all the amazing work they do. I’d also like to thank Paul and Alan from hospital radio, the Chelmsford SDA youth choir, and our facilities and estates team who did so much to make the day happen.”

Paddy Myatt, RRT’s Chelmsford team leader, said: “It’s been a phenomenal day with beautiful weather. It’s been really good to have the mayor and Vicky Ford MP in attendance and we’ve served more burgers than last year.

“We like to support the hospital’s charity – they do a lot of work behind the scenes – and it’s a way of us saying a massive thank you to all of those hard-working members of NHS staff. We could see it has given people a lift.”
