An overview of the service
The department is staffed by 5 colorectal surgeons (Mr Richardson, Mr Pearson, Mr Siddiqi, Mr Hammond & Miss Conn), 2 colorectal nurse specialists (Michelle Davis & Melanie Beetonand), 2 Stomacare Clinical Nurse Specialists (Nikki Saunders & Kerry Sandlin) who provide a wide range of elective and emergency services.
The department provides specialist treatment for colon and rectal diseases including cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor prolapse, faecal incontinence and constipation. Most of the elective surgery is performed by keyhole surgery (laparoscopic) with some being performed by cutting edge robotic or TAMIS surgery.
The department also treats anal conditions such as anal fistula, anal fissures, haemorrhoids and rectal bleeding. Several options of the treatment of each condition are available and each patient is advised according to their own needs. All types of hernia are managed by the department using open or keyhole surgery. Complex abdominal wall surgery is also undertaken as well as colonoscopy. The department has access to some of the most modern laoparoscopic theatres in the country.
