Palliative Care

Specialist Palliative Care Team

Palliative care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive illness. Management of pain and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best quality of life for patients and theirs families. Many aspects of palliative care are also applicable earlier in the course of the illness in conjunction with other treatment  (NICE 2008)

The specialist palliative care team becomes involved with patients with an extraordinary level of need. This often reflects an intensity or complexity of problems across the physical, psychological or spiritual domains.


Hospital specialist  palliative care team consists of :-

  • A Team of palliative clinical nurse specialist

  • Consultants in palliative medicine

  • A lead nurse for cancer + palliative care

  • A team secretary



Referral Criteria

When referring to hospital specialist palliative care team the following should be apply :

  • Patient that have life limiting illness

  • There are complex symptom control issues psychosocial and spiritual issues important to the patient that cannot readily be managed by the team responsible for care. Physical  symptoms e.g., pain, vomiting etc., where 1st line  treatment was instigated but has not helped

  • Patient is in terminal phase and staff needs support/education while commencing appropriate treatment

  • The patients agrees to referral 

  • Patient is currently an in-patient at Broomfield Hospital

  • Patient is over 18 years of age
