How You can Help
Donations to our Charity
Many patients, friends or relatives make a donation to the Trust to say thank you for attentive care and support at what could be the happiest or saddest times of their lives. As a result of this generosity, the Trust has provided additional equipment, facilities and improvements to services for the benefit of patients at MEHT.
A donation to the hospital, whether to a clinic or a particular ward, enables staff to use these funds where the need is greatest. Funds received are carefully and sensitively applied for many different purposes. Your donation could be used to provide additional facilities for patients, or towards purchase of a specific item of medical or scientific equipment.
We also have appeals for specific projects and item. Please see Current Appeals for more information.
You can also support us by volunteering - be it in the hospital or by planting new trees in Pudding Wood.
We are also supported by a wide range of organisations such as the Forestry Commission and BAA through grants for specific projects, and Inntel and Essex County Council through their corporate volunteering programmes. Can your company help too?

A Gift in you Will
Whether it’s for a serious medical condition, a minor accident or the birth of our children, at these times we’d give anything for the very best medical care available. A gift left to MEHT in a Will makes a huge difference to improving patient care – allowing us to offer the best treatment, delivered by the best staff, in the most modern facilities and with the most up-to-date equipment. You don’t need to leave a fortune, or decide between MEHT and your family, but anything you do leave will help to keep delivering the very best care to everyone who needs it – for generations to come. It’s easier to leave a gift than you might think.
Leaving a legacy is also a highly tax efficient way of giving as any charitable gifts left within a Will are not subject to Inheritance Tax.
Please use the link for more information on tax rules:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/will.htm
There are two ways to leave us a gift in your Will:
- Pecuniary gift - you can choose to give a gift of a fixed amount of money
- Residuary gift - you can choose to leave a share, or the whole, of what is left in your estate once you have provided for your loved ones
If you have already made a Will
If you have already made a Will, but would like to leave a gift to us to support the Hospital, you can do so by making a simple addition to your existing Will. This is called a codicil. By adding this supplement to your will you can include new instructions and delete old ones without having to go through the task of revoking the whole Will.
Caring is what you do all your life and a Will means you can continue to “care” after your death.
Please talk to your solicitor or legal advisor for professional advice.
In memoriam giving
You may wish to give a donation to the work of the Hospital in memory of a loved one instead of flowers at the funeral.
To help you in this we could arrange for special envelopes to be given out to place on seats at the service. At a later stage you may wish to establish a memory fund named after your loved one.
An online tribute is a great way for friends and family to commemorate, celebrate or simply remember someone special whilst also having the opportunity to raise donations for the hospital. There are many ways in which you can develop your tribute including adding pictures, music and video and you will also be able to invite friends and relatives to contribute and share treasured memories and images.
Whatever you decide we would be pleased to assist and guide you.
Please contact us to let us know your thoughts.

Direct Debit and Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving (also known as Give as You Earn or GAYE) is one of the easiest, most tax efficient ways of making a regular donation to Mid Essex Hospital Trust Charities. You can donate a set amount each payday to give to our hospital charity. This deduction is made before calculating your taxable pay, which reduces the amount on which you pay tax.
Donations made through this scheme are taken from your gross salary. This means that your donation will cost you up to 40 per cent less, due to it being taken from your pay before tax is deducted. For instance, if you are a basic rate tax payer:
· You pledge £10
· You pay only £7.80
· The taxman will add £2.20 - at no extra cost to you!
And, if you are a higher rate taxpayer, then it will cost you even less to donate £10 as tax is deducted at the higher rate.
Making a difference
Payroll Giving really does make a difference to the way that our Charity can consistently support the vital work of the hospital. It allows us to plan for the acquisition of equipment, the funding of research projects, and the vital services which are over and above our NHS responsibility.

Gift Aid – Did You Know?
The Government makes all charity donations tax-free. This means, as a UK taxpayer, every £100 you donate to a charity under the Gift Aid Scheme (click here for a Gift Aid form) lets the charity, in addition, claim £28.21 back from the Inland Revenue. Please remember to fill in the Gift Aid section on the Donation Leaflet.
Donations in Kind
We are always delighted to receive gifts for all our patients, but sometimes we can't accept what you send us due to concerns about infection, and restrictive storage space. To help you, we've compiled a list of what we love to receive and what we can't use, check out our Donations in Kind page.
