This section provides information patients need to know when coming into hospital. The information below identifies general information, and from the menu on the left you can access more specific information on what to expect during a visit to hospital.
Inpatients
Your involvement in your care not only helps to make your own stay in hospital better, it helps us to learn and adapt our service for the benefit of everyone. Therefore, we welcome your views, they help us to know when we are getting it right, but it is equally important to know when we are getting it wrong so we can use this information to give all our patients the best care possible.
If there is anything further you need to know before you are admitted, please contact us on the telephone number on your admission letter.
Outpatients
Leave plenty of time to travel to the hospital and find your clinic. If you are not sure where to go please ask at the reception desk.
If you need information, a wheelchair or any other help when you arrive, please ask at the outpatient reception desk.
If you have any questions or are unsure about what to do or what is happening, please ask – staff are there to help.
Please tell the clinic receptionist if you have any hearing or sight impairment.
Delays may happen sometimes. For example, when doctors are called away on an emergency, consultations take longer than expected or emergency cases are referred. Please bear with us in these circumstances – we will be working to see you as soon as possible. Clinic staff will keep you informed about what is happening.
You will be seen either by the consultant or by one of their team.
You will be asked about your previous medical history, so it’s a good idea to make short notes on information you think is helpful before you come to clinic including a list of the medication you are currently taking. This includes anything prescribed by your GP, medicines bought over the counter at a pharmacy, herbal and homeopathic remedies. You may also find it useful to make a note of questions you want to ask.
Bring a pen and paper with you – it may be useful for you to make notes about anything the doctor says in the clinic so you can be clear about what has been discussed later.
Visiting
Car parking, travel information, visiting times, numbers of visitors and facilities across the six sites do vary, so please do make use of the information for each hospital.

Ward Information
As a general rule at Mid Essex Hospitals, the number of a ward refers to the level (floor) the ward is on, and the letter is the building. Some wards, however, have names, and some wards are in temporary locations while they are being moved or refurbished.
You can phone straight through to the ward on the numbers provided in the hospital information pages above. Please click on any of these links to access further ward information.
When sending cards or letters to patients, please write the patient's name and the ward name on the envelope, e.g: *Name*, Ward **, Broomfield Hospital, Court Road, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 7ET.
Infection Control
Clean your hands – together we can fight infection.
Remember you can help us fight infection
Like hospitals up and down the country we need to control a number of different hospital infections, not just MRSA and Clostridium difficile. We have a proactive approach to the control of multi-drug resistant organisms to prevent them becoming established in the hospital.
This includes keeping infected patients apart from others, controlling admissions, along with appropriate protective clothing and hand washing procedures for staff and visitors.
Remember When on Site
From 1st June 2007 Smoking has not been allowed anywhere on our Sites.
Use antibacterial hand gel where provided, on entry to and departure from wards and departments.
If you are unwell, or have had diarrhoea or vomiting in the last 24 hours please do not visit the hospital. If in doubt please contact the ward you plan to visit.
Violence and aggression is not tolerated towards any hospital staff. Any person found to be aggressive or violent will face criminal proceedings.
